MARIA ELISA MOREIRA

Motherland

In October 2017, Portugal’s firefighters battled 440 fires around the entire country over the course of 3 days. This inferno reduced land into a barren landscape of charcoal and left a whole nation grieving. In Motherland, I return home to portray an existential loss of land and security. Through self- portrait, earth and body become one as I embrace the trees as care givers, resembling love for a parent or partner. Motherland is an introspective journey of love, growth, emotional attachment and displacement.
